Curriculum

Find information about our curriculum below.

The curriculum is everything that takes place in a school so that everyone has an equal opportunity of success. The Education Reform Act 1988 entitles every child to a balanced and broadly based curriculum.

The National Curriculum is a legally binding selection of knowledge, skills and attitudes which schools are required to teach. It is divided into four core subjects and six foundation subjects taught, in this school, with Religious Education.

These subjects must be taught but alone they do not form a complete curriculum. More will be needed to secure a balanced and broadly based curriculum. Health and sex education, personal and social education, multicultural and equal opportunities will also need to be included. Schools are free to choose the teaching methods they wish to use and at St Mary’s teachers combine group work and whole class teaching with individual tuition.

The school traditionally aims for high standards in the basic skills and their application across the curriculum.

Assessment is an on-going process, monitoring the progress of each child. All the children's work will be continuously assessed on a day to day basis and they will be tested at 7 and 11 years old by nationally devised testing, known as SATs - 'Standard Assessment Tests'.

There are additional tests at the end of years 3, 4 and 5 in preparation for the SATs in Year 6. Written reports are sent to all parents at the end of the Summer Term.
