At St Mary’s Primary School, we recognise the significant contribution of PE to the health and well-being of all children. In addition, we believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
WHAT IS THE SPORTS PREMIUM?
The government is providing funding worth £150 million per year and is provided jointly by the Department for Education, the Department of Health and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Prime Minister David Cameron announced in February 2014 that the Government have committed to funding for the Primary PE and Sport Premium to 2020. This money is going directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. At St Mary’s that will mean approximately £16,000 a year plus £10 per pupil.
PURPOSE OF THE FUNDING?
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses of the funding include:
Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to working alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits
How is the money already helping at St Mary’s
PROVIDE EXISTING STAFF WITH TEACHING RESOURCES TO HELP THEM TEACH PE AND SPORT
To facilitate quality teaching and learning a nationally recognised scheme of work will be purchased using PE Premium and will provide staff with detailed planning and assessment material which they can adapt and deliver ensuring effective transition between year groups and key stages. The Scheme of Work will also be in line with the new National Curriculum, which was introduced in September 2014.
RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT
It is important to ensure that we have the appropriate equipment to cover the range of sports we have on offer. PE Premium money will ensure we a range of resources and equipment we require, some specialist and some for the general teaching of skills all in order to provide better quality PE lessons.
Any extra Primary School Sport’s Funding will be used to enable us to continue to develop our PE provision through employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.
